Lorraine, if you live in California, there are direct flights every summer
(May through September) from Oakland to Terceira.  These are the flights I have
flown the last few times I visited the Azores.
From Terceira, I have flown to Sao Miguel and have a great taxi driver I use
there.  Carlos Rego speaks English; is enthusiastic about looking for the
places ancestors lived and visiting anyone in the villages that might have more
information about the family you seek.
In Terceira, I have relied on Joao Ventura to direct me to taxi drivers that
help me visit the villages where my ancestors lived; to find information in the
churches where they lived; to see the sights they saw, etc.
In Faial, I have found taxi drivers (some better than others) that drive
around the island to see the sights and also to visit the villages where my
ancestors lived.
I visited Sao Jorge only one time and did, after some searching, find a taxi
driver that spoke English and understood what I wanted to see on this island.
The only place I took a tour was on the Mainland in Lisbon.  Since I had no
ancestors from this area in Portugal, I was interested in just seeing the
sights.
If you need additional information about any of the Islands I mention, feel
free to contact me privately and I can share my findings with you.

Subject: [AZORES-Genealogy] Azores trip

We’re planning a trip to the Azores in May.  Does anyone know of any planned
trips, good deals, air fares, hotels?  I’m guessing the main airport
is in San Miguel.  We’ll want to travel to Graciosa (my family’s
birthplace) and probably Terciera, by boat? plane?.  Any other
suggestions?  What about a driver/tour guide?  Thanks much!
