I was surprised by how current some people's connections were to the US. A cabby picked us up from Horta - we never looked for English-speaking cab drivers - he ended up having a son in the US (California). Also, when visiting Capelas, I went into the bar by the church, across from the Whalers monument, and there was a guy who was from Fall River, there. He helped me look for family. Unfortunately we were not able to track any down.
Being in the Azores was so much fun. -Trevor -----Original Message----- From: Cheri Mello <[email protected]> To: azores <[email protected]> Sent: Thu, Jan 24, 2013 1:17 pm Subject: Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Azores trip Lorraine, I think the rates go up in the spring through the fall, because that is more of the tourist season. Sao Miguel has an airport. Actually, all the islands do. But think to get from North America or Europe to the Azores, you need to fly into a larger airport. Sao Miguel has a larger airport (Ponta Delgada or PDL) and Terceria has a larger airport too (TER). I think Faial has one which is Horta. But I'm not sure. I don't know the airport code for that. >From the major airport, you can get to any island by boat or plane. You don't say where you live. I'd fly to TER and after my visit there, go to Graciosa. As for a taxi/tour guide, I don't know of any on those islands (although I'm sure other list members do). I just went to the taxi stand and asked for an English speaking taxi driver. After a couple of trips, I managed enough Portuguese to use any taxi driver. I've used referrals from others for a tour guide. One time, I decided to take a trip to the other side of Sao Miguel. I found an English speaking taxi driver to help me, asked him how long it would take driving there and back, and spending an hour or so looking for relatives. I asked him how much he would make in 4 hours and that's the price we agreed on for him to be my taxi/tour guide.
