Somehow your message came to me, but didn't make it to the list yet.
Well, I'll give you and anyone who doesn't know it a huge tip.
When records run out, you need to look at each and every record, not just baptisms, but also deaths, and see who are the godparents in baptisms and who might be the "testamenteiro" in case of a will at death and see who is mentioned as relatives.
There are key words for each type of record. For example, in death records you need to know the meanings of family relationships, like son, daughter, uncle, nephew, brother-in-law, etc.
You never know where that vital piece of information will come from. You might find a death of someone you never heard of that ends up being the father of the wife of your ancestor.
Sometimes when a person died, it says they were buried in the grave of their grandparents. That means they were certainly living in that place for more than one generation and not from some other village or other island.
It usually won't name the grandparents, but maybe they will.
One needs to buckle down and create a list of all the villagers and all their families, because you don't know who is related. Clues are godparents, of course. Always study the families of the godparents.
Of course, all this takes lots of time. So if a person is not inclined to put in the hard work, maybe they are rich enough to hire me. :-)
About your Spanish ancestors from Ribeiras, I can't think of a single family that was from Spain. There is one from Italy in the older records.
Of course, Avila is originally from Spain and maybe that's the one your family was thinking about when they said that. You surely know Avila is all over Ribeiras and just about every Pico, Faial, and Sao Jorge village.

Thanks Doug, doing well here. Just somewhat retired from my research. As you told me in the past, there are those missing records in Ribeiras, Pico that prevented me from from searching some of my lines further. I will send you what I do have tomorrow. Maybe you have a clue or two for me.,
I do have broken links from Piedade & Calheta do Nesquim, Pico as well as Lajes.
As I told you in the past my mom remembered one of her Uncles talking about the Ribeiras ancestor from Spain. Another 2nd cousin in MA. also remembers hearing that. Unfortunately, no records available during that time frame.
My best to you.........
Patricia
