Pam, I am not a native english speaker, so I don´t know if I can explain it well, but bicho not always has a pejorative connotation. Here in Brazil in the early 1960's the word bicho was a slang referring to a friend, to a dude, a buddy, a guy. If you say "E aí, bicho?", it is almost the same as "What's up guy, dude ?", something like that.
Bicho means insects and animals in general. In the northeast area of Brazil the word 'bichinho", the diminutive form, is used as a gentle way to call someone you like. So, it's very difficult to say what was the connotation of the word bicho used as an 'alcunha' one or two centuries before.
