David K,

I don't have the answer to your question, but the records you are looking
for do exist. I'm sure the information varies from the mid-1800s versus
the later 1800s, etc.

I know steamships took about 2 weeks to get from the Azores to North
America. A brig or bark would take much longer. If you can figure out how
long it took the ship to sail, you might be able to email the archives in
Horta, on Faial with a timespan of about a month and perhaps they will look
it up for you.

I don't know where I put the email address for Horta Archives. Someone
will post it or email you directly.

For those who want to know what exists in the 3 district archives, here it
is:

*District archive of Horta*: 1836-1939; since 1856 they are indexed and
give the towns or parishes of birth.

*District archive of Angra do Heroismo*: 1775-1818, 1844-1845, 1857-1924.
*District archive of Ponta Delgada*:
Existing: 1875 May-1883 Oct; 1894 Nov - 1908 Oct; 1910 Jan-1920 Jan; 1922
Sep-1939
Dec; 1950 Feb-1953 Mar. All records before and in the gaps are missing.
