Hi Laurie J, You've got the names, dates, and the actual place (freguesia) in the Azores! Wow, you are lucky.
Ancestry doesn't have much for the Portuguese researcher. You need the Azorean government web site, Centro de Conhecimento dos Acores (CCA as we call it). http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/ig/ You can get a free genealogy software program and Gedcom information back and forth once you make a connection. Legacy Family Tree's standard edition is free and so is RootsMagic's Essentials. The other 2 that are popular for a PC are The Master Genealogist and Family Tree Maker. A Google search will turn them up. Joseph = Jose. Mary Agnes Perry might be Maria Agnes Pereira, but that will depend on a few things which you'll uncover as you research. John M is Joao Medeiros (I'm guessing the M is for Medeiros). Immigration to the east coast could be Boston, New Bedford, Providence, or New York (Ellis Island for your time period). We need a bit more of a timeline on your Joseph Medeiros Cabral. Born when? In Urzelina, Sao Jorge. To Joao M & Barbara Bettencourt. Immigrated 1901 possibly Boston. He married Mary Agnes Perry 30 Nov 1909 in Westport, MA. Died when and where? A good place to start is the Azores GenWeb. Here's the how to guide, about 30 pages long. http://goo.gl/tdrIw A few people get lucky, but most of us had to research to the early 1800s to make a connection on this list. -- Cheri Mello Listowner, Azores-Gen Researching: Vila Franca, Ponta Garca, Ribeira Quente, Ribeira das Tainhas, Achada -- For options, such as changing to List, Digest, Abridged, or No Mail (vacation) mode, log into your Google account and visit this group at http://groups.google.com/group/Azores.
