Hi Margie,

Either a male or female can take the Family Finder test. And either a male
or female can take an mtDNA test. Only men can take the Y-DNA test.

But, if you are mixed like me, and have access to another relative who is
less mixed, use that relative. I'm 1/4 Portuguese. My dad is half. I
used him to trace the Y-DNA line as well as the Family Finder. It's very
easy for me to tell my dad's Portuguese half from his American half.

Also, this came up in a conversation I was having. If someone has only 1
parent alive, test yourself and that parent. You will be able to filter
your matches for "In Common With" or "Not in Common With." So even though
you had one parent's DNA tested, you can use the process of elimination to
figure out the other parent. (If you have access to the deceased parent's
siblings though, it's better to use them, as you get one generation further
back).

Keep asking questions. The genetic field keeps changing and it takes a
while to have the new information sink in.
