Thanks on the mystery word. I did look at the wife's name, Francisca and see that it's different that this. Thanks Cheri for pointing this out. I started looking for the marriage between Manoel de Souza and Izabel de Lima.
I've learned from you all not to think that the last name automatically passes on. The entire name is given at birth by the parents right? So it is the PARENTS who decided to pass on the name of the mother, Izabel de Lima. I never thought of that before, Duh!! By the way, is "De Souza" just about the most common surname in the Azores? It sure seemed like it as I searched for Manoel de Souza. I don't know much about the background of De Souza name. Funny point here: before I ever started doing geneology, we named our second son--- Antonio Manuel! (Lima).
