Hello Shirley,

I believe you have already run out of records for Lomba and will not be able to extend those lines, unless you get lucky and find someone from Lomba married in another village. For instance, I have seen records of people from Lomba who married in other islands like Terceira.

In regards your surname Miguel, it is most likely a given name of one of your earlier ancestors that was used by later generations in his honor.

For example, Francisco de Freitas Miguel, the oldest known ancestor on that line might have decided to honor his father who might have the name Miguel de Freitas.

This exact thing is very common in the Azores, at least. It would surprise me if it wasn't also common elsewhere in Portugal, but I don't have enough experience elsewhere to tell you with any confidence.

I have an ancestor whose name was Lourenço da Rocha Homem on my direct paternal line. Most of the time he used just Lourenço da Rocha, born in 1751, if I recall correctly, in Terceira. My line continued with the double surname of Rocha Homem (now Rocha Holmes for my children), but his brothers, four of them, honored their father by using as their surname the combination of Rocha Lourenço. And like your Miguel line, this name combination continues to this day in Terceira. In fact, there is a person in the USA who got the DNA test named Lawrence who is one of these descendants and they didn't even know it was in honor of that ancestor.

Good luck.

Thanks for responding so promptly.  I have some information on my 2nd great grandfather Nicolau de Freitas (B-abt 1795 I think Lomba, Lajes das Flores & D-12 Feb 1860 documented in Lomba, Lajes das Flores) & on his wife Ana de Jesus Pimentel (B-1800, D-1886) also Lomba, Lajes das Flores.  I'm looking to expand information on Nicolau's parents (Francisco de Freitas Miguel B-abt 1732 & Maria Francisca Pimentel).  We have looked at records in Flores & nearby Corvo but we're not finding anything.  Should I look on other islands?  If so, do you have an on-line resource that I could research?  Since the surname Miguel does not seem common in the islands, could they have immigrated from mainland Portugal?  What source is available for Portugal?  I've done the search on the Ancestry data base & found nothing on any island.
