I use both Ancestry and Family Tree Maker. Cheri is correct for the overall, but there are some things to be aware of:
* The sync doesn't get everything on ancestry. For example, all of the data associated with documents and headstones does not come down to FTM. If I have text in the translation field on ancestry, it never appears in FTM. * Things change more frequently in the cloud (Ancestry). They are very regularly trying new things. Some things disappear completely. For example, I spent a lot of time tagging faces in pictures only to have the feature, and data, disappear. Better to just describe in notes. * They are constantly breaking the sync feature. This generally corrupts the FTM file. I don't mind as much since my "master" is always the cloud copy. * As Cheri states, I like "owning" the data. Should Ancestry disappear or crash, I can continue (with diminished data). Also, I periodically let my subscription expire and turn to free services. It forces me to look elsewhere for a time. I find newspapers and browsing images on familysearch very worthwhile. * This is a big one! If you don't have a subscription with Ancestry, they will not let you view records you have ALREADY attached. This bugs me to no end! They will, however, continue to sell your pictures and records to only subscribers. So, the sync with FTM gives you access to your Ancestry records when not subscribed. * Try the different Ancestry access points (web, iPhone, Android) every now and then. They often screw up security on upgrades and provide free record access for a time. Also, the iPhone (right now) allows individual record purchases for $1.99. Not cheap, butter better than paying for a month for 1 or 2 records. * Some records are FREE no matter you subscription status. No, Ancestry does not make it obvious which records! Anything from the 1940 census, find a grave, billion graves, and many others, are always free. You'll have to develop a list. If you select a premium record, just back up from the prompt to subscribe. Good luck!
