Hello JR,

You're probably right, but I do find it's use interesting, and unique.
But, that's probably what the family was aiming for because of the many
Medeiros familes in the Azores. I do have records of the de Medeiros
Brilhantes of Faja de Baixo using the name Brilhante from the the 1740's.
I can't push the name back further because the family was originally from
Maia, Ribeira Grande.

Here is a baptism for Francisca, top left, from 1748, daugther of Manoel de
Medeiros Brilhante and Francisca do Rego

Here is a baptism for Joze, top left, 1750

Another one for Genoveva, bottom right, 1754

I do understand what you mean, because I have seen some of the Medeiros
Jardim's of Ponta Garca using the name Jardim, and some not. But, I have
seen plenty of de Medeiros's...so I could see how a family nickname became
part of their surname as a means to differentiate them from other
families.
