Hi Karen,

You probably want to learn about St. Anthony's Church in East Cambridge.
That is the Portuguese Church for the City. I don't know when it was
originally built, but an FYI is that a new building was built maybe after
1950 - on a different street, I believe.

My (now) husband spent most of his life in Cambridge, and grew up on Gore
St. in East Cambridge. There were many nationalities on Gore St. and in
East Cambridge, in general. His family moved to Cambridgeport during the
1950's, but his father's relatives mostly remained in East Cambridge and
Somerville next to it.

Another FYI is that his grandfather, Antonio PACHECO, was killed in a car
accident in ~1929, and there were 3 other, Portuguese men in the car with
him. At least 3 of the 4 men did not survive their injuries. From
memory at 7 am, I'm pretty sure one of the men was a SILVA. And possibly
a MACHADO. .. "Tony" married Elsita "Elsie" MOURA in ~1912, and her
mother and sisters were also in East Cambridge (or Somerville). Her
brothers were also there initially but moved out of state in 1920's.
And, I found out last fall her mother's brothers with the da ROSA name were
already there.

You'll find many Portuguese surnames in Cambridge and Somerville, and the
young adults marrying Portuguese people. For example, the couple Frank
and Carolina (MOURA) MEDEIROS had relatives marrying MACHADO people.

(I grew up in Arlington, right beside Cambridge and Somerville, so I'm
somewhat familiar with the area. And, I know many Portuguese moved to
Arlington or neighboring towns.

I have access to the 1920 census, and I just checked. There were ~260
people with the SILVA name in just Middlesex County. And, you
mentioned that your Joe and Maria SILVA didn't arrive until 1921. If you
wanted to mention the brother's name, I'll see if he is mentioned in the
1920 census.
