Maria, The mores at the time was that it was not considered proper for an unmarried couple to live in the same house. Having a young child was a driving force on getting married quickly in order that the child could have a woman to take care of him/her 24/7.
It is sometimes interesting where this second wife came from. In some cases she was related to the first wife either a cousin or sister. I have seen many second wives that were pais incognito as well kind of a win-win situation the husband got a wife to run his household and the wife got a family and the security and acceptance that went with it. I was curious if this couple had children and thus the reason the husband would need a mother for his children. They did have a child who was 9 months old when she died. Just thought I'd share the results of my little curiosity.
