It happens to all of us 100% of the time, eventually.
Just think how disappointing it would be if any of your ancestors came from Bandeiras, Pico where the records START in 1850. There are some villages on Flores where it's just a little before that.
But have you already found all the baptisms of this oldest generation? Because as you know, those padrinhos are talking to you and giving you clues.
And then, have you been paying attention to all the mentions of consanguinidade or afinidade?
You might be lucky to find that one or more descendants on that line were married in some later century and can figure out the next older generation. This was the topic of my most recent article published in O Progresso, the newsletter of the Portuguese Historical and Cultural Society of Sacramento.
Of course, you might be at the end of the line. But then don't forget to scour all the baptisms, marriages and deaths for that period in search of more clues. Look for witnesses, mentions of relations in the obitos, and again for padrinhos for other couples. You are bound to find them mentioned more and will find some exciting clues.

I wonder why Santo Espirito Marriages ends in 1708 and Birth records go up to 1671? or Vila to 1630?The father of my Balthazar is also Balthazar Gomes and mother Izabel da Fonte. I will dig into the birth records, backwards, to see If I'm lucky. I found from a search on the web there is a lady that has some of these Gomes in her Genealogy, it s blog, I can't remember the site I believe she has a link there to this group so I wonder if she is here. I notice she got marriages prior to 1708, for some of these Gomes, how?There is a Balthazar Gomes Moura, a Balthazar Gomes Velho and a couple more I cant remember. I found in one of my Balthazar Gomes's grandson's birth record that the vicar wrote down his name as Balthazar Gomes Freitas, but having 3 of his son's birth records, death record and birth record only as Gomes an not Gomes Freitas, is confusing me quite a bit.Hello group,I believe i am at the end of the rope for my biggest sadness, and suspecting that the marriage of Baltazar (Balthazar) Gomes and Mariana (Marianna) Melo (Mello) somewhere between 1725-1740, is gone! not to mention that the hole period of marriages 1708-1751 are (were) really in bad shape. In the periods I have been searching I found few "Balthazar" Gomes, not many, I know mine was born in 1707, I got his birth record, but I am starting to believe that these are all from the same "prole", but I might be wrong.
