Friday while visiting my grandmother(92 yrs) old, she wanted me to have and gave me the Rosery beads that belonged to my GGgrandmother Luisa Emilia da Silveira, born may 1861 Salao, Faial. Married Jose da Rosa Pinheiro from Cedros, Faial, they married and lived in Cedros but when she died it was in Salao and she was buried there. I don't have those details about her husband. My question is at what time would she have been given the Rosery beads? Are there any traditions? Such as passed down from generation to generation? Or were they hers and did people who died take them on there next journey? For the beads to have ended up here in the states she must have passed them down to my Ggrandfather or to her one daughter that also came to the states?
My grandmother who gave them to me is Italian, but my grandfather was Portuguese of Azorean descent who had the Rosery beads until he passed. I'm curious about the histories about how, why, and who obtained the beads which I now hold in my hand. They are made out of all medal, the details are all hand made and spectacular. You can tell they are very old. Should I have them blessed now that they are in my possesion? I know that's a lot of questions but i've never been given such a gift and I want to make sure I treat them as they should. Thank you!!!
