Eric,
I always attributed what you describe to the effort of keeping things lined up and flush right and left. Sometimes we get pretty strange places to hyphenate names and words, like:
....... M-
anoel ....
On another subject, which I thought of after looking at your email name "noia," have you ever heard of the basketball player I've been hearing on ESPN radio which they pronounce like "Joke-em Noah?" I am thinking they are just butchering Joaquim and if that's true, then maybe Noah is really Noia. Just curious.

Doug,I've noticed that on some older books you see the writing getting cutoff and continued on the next line, or the scrawling at an angle to fit. This shows the pages were already bound. Then there some where they are clear and neat, whichI assume to mean they were copied from the older records to a new book.Eric Edgar
