I recently found out that my husband's 7th great-grandfather was listed as a black slave in his marriage record according to Canto's index. I am very interested in finding out what life was like for slaves in Azores in the early 1700's. I am hoping people in this group can suggest some books or websites that are informative on this subject.
I don't expect that I will find much information on his ancestor directly, but I am hoping to gather some information about what his life might have been like, how he might have gained his freedom in order to be married, and how his bride might have been treated during their marriage and after he passed away (they were only married for 6 years before he died). Thank you in advance for your ideas.
