Erica, while there* were *slaves in the Azores, it wasn't widespread (which
doesn't erase the fact). Sao Miguel was more involved in the* "slave
trade"*than actually owning slaves for plantation work, for example. It had
been
designated as the "clearing house" for the slave trade. The people of Sao
Miguel, however, feared a "slave revolt," as had happened in other places -
so they quickly shipped off slaves to Brazil, Sao Tome, Principe, and,
other places - but, not to Asia, where the pirates controlled the seas. The
few that remained in the Azores did household, and domestic work - and, of
those, most all were soon freed by their owners.
