Hi Cheri, I think I mentioned this recently, but the first time that Portugal established spelling rules was in 1910. There wasn't really any 'proper' spelling before that. So yes, 'Agada' and 'Agueda' being phonetically the same name should be regarded as the same (same with Hanna, Anna, Ana). You can choose whether to record the 'older spelling' or the 'modernized' version - it's a similar choice to the one the priests had when creating those records (that's why some wrote Joao, and others wrote Joam). It all depends on how much you want to help other researchers in their search (and also a measure of the ability of future search algorithms to 'guess' alternate name spellings).
