I can't agree more. This is a terrific tool.
It took only 2 days to process my raw data.
And using it will give you better insight as to why your parent matches but you don't match a particular person.
I find myself testing/comparing at the 1cM level just to see all common DNA and not miss anything and I think it's more accurate in estimating the MRCA (most recent common ancestor).
And for ethnic origins, it's blows away the FTDNA "MyOrigins" info, but you have to test with many of the various tools they have. I spent hours and hours looking them all over last night. Test for African, test for Eastern European (if you have any), test for Jewish which we all have, etc.
To get started, go to their website gedmatch.com and create an account.
Then to go your FTDNA Family Finder tab to download two files that both say 36. One that is X and the other just regular. You will upload both files to them and immediately be able to start comparing with others if you know their kit numbers. If you don't know anyone's kit number, and if you want to compare to mine, just email me and I'll give you something to start to play around with until you can compare to "Many" and can view everyone's data who have also uploaded their raw data.
There is an option for uploading a gedcom, but you don't have to use it.
Thanks to Antonio Faria for getting me started with Gedmatch. Fantastic.
If you like what I write and didn't get a DNA test, then start by getting tested and you too will have a lot of fun learning more details about your ancestry.
Probably the most amusing find last night was that I have a tiny fraction of Pigmy DNA. I'm the shortest in my family, so I guess that fits. :-)
