That was a real tragedy. Many of them were cousins, 1st or 2nd, and a few were my relatives, like great-grandchildren of my ancestors. The ages weren't stated in the death record, but they ranged from their 20s and up.

Just yesterday I was looking through the obitos for Prainha do Norte, Pico and found a lady's death that said she died in a fire at sea. If I recall, she was only married a couple years, so was very young.

You'll see many instances of people who died at sea in the Pico death records.

Hi Maria,

I don't think you should be looking for a shipwreck per se.  The translation is incorrect.  It should read, "sank a boat from this Parish in which died.....".  The words were "naufragou um barco desta freguesia em que morreram...".  A barco is a small vessel not a ship.  Those men must have been all fishermen.

Sorry, the previous e-mail was missing the attachment.

The death record for my 6th great grandfather documents him and seven other men who on 20 October 1759, died in a shipwreck.  I been trying to find information on shipwrecks in the Azores and haven't found anything.  Does anyone know of any book or sites on this subject?

I've attached the record in a word documents as well as the transcription and summary translation.

Maria
