Liz,

Numbers on what? The Y DNA? That's the number of markers tested. The
more makers, the closer in time. Y-DNA 12 is more for anthropology or to
disprove a theory. For genealogy, most people will need to start with
Y-DNA 37 or if the budget allows, Y-DNA 67. We don't have enough men
matching yet to recommend Y-DNA 111 yet. But if it is in the budget, go
for it.

Elaine, I'll have to explain genetic distance (or steps off from a match)
later. Or maybe Rick or Kalani can chime in. Too much typing right now to
explain it and I need to go.

On my mom's Scottish line, I'm using her cousin's Y-DNA 37 markers along
with my mom's Family Finder matches. Someone who shows up on both is more
likely to be a cousin within the last 200 years. I'm thinking my mom's
Duncan line needs upgrading to 67, as the 37 matching are playing out in a
genealogy time period. More men testing from her line will prove or
disprove that theory.
