I now recall skimming over many records that had Manoel Francisco listed as a parent or spouse but; I ignored them as I was looking for the illusive surname: Catherina/o. Guess I’d best go back and see what other names were on those records! I’m familiar with the changing surnames in differing generations and often in siblings of the same generation. Just wasn’t familiar with dropping all surnames and only using the two given names. (They do have fun with us, don’t they! 😩 )

John; My husband has Swedish ancestry, among others, and they also tack on the first name of the father to their surname so, the Portuguese who did do this are not alone. Cheri; I think your ancestor must have loved his Umbelina very much to add her name to his. Warms my heart.
