Eric, I know you got the information from Familysearch. However, they have no idea what they're talking about.. It's not the Catholic Church that's preventing them to do anything.
It's actually the Portuguese Government that forbids them to provide those books to external members. It's all part of the same agreement that allowed them to scan the books in the first place.
