Thanks for your responses, Maryann and JR! This establishes Remigio as a first name. But, it seems as a last name not so common--and the combination Pacheco Remigio (or Remigio Pacheco) as a surname even more rare.
I can't get into the CCA website right now to see the records. So, I thought I'd give some background since my info. was a bit vague. My Remigio Pacheco b. 1799, Maia, Ribeira Grande, was the son of Antonio Pacheco de Resendes and Anna de Jesus. This line is well documented in both directions in Maia. It connects in Rodrigo Rodrigues' works and goes back to the original settlers of the Azores. The Brasilian researcher has this ancestor: Maria Emilia Pacheco Remigio, b. 1891, Brasil; d. 1921 Maia, Ribeira Grande. She married Jose Jacinto Medeiros, possibly in Maia. Maria Emilia's parents were: Florencio Remigio Pacheco, 1860, Santo Amaro, Brasil and Maria Jose da Conceicao, ca. 1859. She has no death dates for either. It is my understanding that Florencio's wife died and then he took his daughter to Maia to raise her. That seems to indicate some connection to Maia. Then it gets dicey. Florencio's parents were Amara Antonio Pacheco and Felicia Maria Vaz da Rocha. No dates or places for either. The line continues to go back for a few generations in Brasil with no mention of Remigio again. Maria Jose da Conceicao's father is unknown, mother Paulina Maria da Conceicao. The researcher has an immigration record associated with Maria going from Fayal to Rhode Island on the Olinda in 1892. It makes for a confusing immigration trail. Why was she in Rhode Island coming from Fayal if her husband was in Brasil? Anyway, I'm sure you are as confused as I am now.
