If I understand enough of the two records you point out.

The first record as a matter of factually states that Maria da Paxam is single
(never married) Other than her name, age and parish no relations are
identified. She had 11 Masses said for her.

The second record is a bit more difficult for me to understand but Francisca
Maria Caneia there is no married status is given single, married or widowed.
There are a number of witnesses named but I do not understand the purpose. I am
not sure the parish she was baptized in. I also note that 17 Masses were said
for her.

In the first record I first pointed out
http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-RG-ESTRELA-O-1799-1811/SMG-RG-ESTRELA-O-1799-1811_item1/P114.html
There is basically no difference to the record of Maria da Paxam except her
record has Solteira and the record for Manuel Joam has sui juris. These records
were done by the same writer Rev Manuel Ignacio Cabral do Rego so the use of
them must have meant something to him. So that is the point of my questioning.

I guess I get hung up on details and I am not even dealing with a record with
a record in my line with sui juris. I just saw the record and want to
understand it better.

Thank you Margaret and I wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Rick,

It can only be shown by example. Please have a look at this record and compare
it to your link. What do you see different?

http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-RG-ESTRELA-O-1799-1811/SMG-RG-ESTRELA-O-1799-1811_item1/P113.html

and now look at this one where the words "sui juris" are also displayed.

You now have enough to draw the proper understanding or interpretation.

Cheers,

Margaret
