I want to say the words are "praça de taxis." There are several taxi praças. You generally can't miss them. A whole bunch of yellow taxis lined up, waiting for the next customer.
I've found most taxi drivers to be quite helpful. Unless you are in Ponta Delgada and want to go to Nordeste. They all think I want to see the sunrise and tell me to come back the next day. I kept explaining I wanted to find my family but they really wanted me to see the sunrise too! I went to 3 different praças before I was able to convince a taxi driver to take me to Nordeste.
