I put this info out on the List every few years in the hopes that someone will recognize this family!
Maria is my grandmother's sister and after she married Joao in 1914 in Oakland CA, they moved "back East". No one in the family remember where "back East"! Little is known about her except that she had 3 children, at least one boy and one girl and the sex of the third child is unknown. She supposedly died of a brain tumor either in the 1920's or while she was in her 20's! Joao Machado Avila was born in Norte Grand, Sao Jorge to Joao Machado Avila & Maria Magdalana de Azevedo. According to his marriage record, he was 25 years old and making his birth about 1889. I found a baptismal certificate for a Joao born to the above couple in 1889j, Image #11 in the Norte Grande baptisms. It looks like there was a previous marriage in the Islands, perhaps she died? Anyway, He then married Maria Vieira da Silva, daughter of Francisco Vieira da Silva and Maria de Azevedo on 16 Aug 1914 in Oakland CA. They must have moved right away because my Grandmother arrived in the US sometime late 1914 or early 1915 and her sister was already gone. If this story sounds at all familier to anyone I would appreciate it if you contact me at my private email addy.
