Mary, I do method 1 unless de/da/do is part of their legal name. For Maria do Rosario Silva, I would have her under Silva. But for others, it depends. My Mello Barbosa line is under M because when I traced him he was a Mello for a long time before tacking on Barbosa to distinguish himself from his uncle, cousin, and nephew, all with the exact same name.
