Sorry, apelido is surname and alcunha is nickname. In casual conversation, people seem to use them interchangeably, but they aren't really. I remember a guy at our hall explaining that his alcunha was this and his apelido was that and half the table told him no it wasn't, he had it backwards, blah blah blah. I'm sure he wanted to go under the table at that point or pour the sopas over their heads!
