I know "Rua" is street. The others, such as "Canada" I think of avenue, place, circle, drive, parkway. A thing that designates a row of houses. I've never tried to translate it. My rule is I translate into English the word Azores (instead of Açores), as any map I buy in America says Azores. (Others would beg to differ and list Açores in their genealogy program). Once I'm inside the borders, I start using Portuguese. The island names are in Portuguese (Terceira, São Miguel), the freguesias are in Portuguese, the churches are in Portuguese, and so are the streets (if I am lucky enough to find that information). I may look up the literal meaning, just for curiosity's sake, but I don't use it in my genealogy program. Saying that an ancestor was from Thin Tip, Flowers island is going too far. Most of us list it in Portuguese, we just differ on the Azores vs Açores part. Cheri
