(cross posted to Azores, Madeira, and IslandRoutes lists)

With the DNA results starting to come in, now might be a good time to
explain a couple of features.

I created a document that explains with pictures, how to use the Note icon
(talk balloon) in the Family Finder match section. I cannot attach it to
this email, as the Rootsweb server (where the Maderia list is housed) does
not accept attachments. Also, I'm not crazy about having the document out
on the Internet for the world to see. Therefore, please email me for the
document and I will email it to you personally (My direct email: gfscherim
at gmail.com)

In the document, I take screen shots from my dad's matches and gave some
examples of what to do and what not to do.

Initially, I tell people to make a note of when they emailed their match (I
did NOT provide a screen shot of that). This way, you won't be emailing
them every other day! After you start emailing each other, this is where
you will edit your notes.

Here is the text from the document. The document comes with pictures.

Text for picture 1:

Matches have 4 icons under their name.

1) Envelope: Used to email the match.

2) Talk balloon: Used to make notes about the match.

3) Tree icon: It is green when the match has uploaded their tree/Gedcom.

4) Twisting arrows: Can chose "In Common With" or "Not in Common With" to
see the list of matches your match has.

Note: Nancy, the first match, is marked as a 1st cousin. But how? A quick
look at the note balloon would help, but no note has been made.

Text for picture 2:

Clicking on the Talk Balloon reveals the above note about how the match is
made.

Text for picture 3:

Some matches are works in progress. Write your notes so someone else can
understand them. One day, you, your match, and the current FTDNA Admins
will not be here. When a new match comes in, the future admins can work
with your notes along with the matches to make the connection.

Text for picture 4:

Being Azorean & Madeiran, we may match many ways. Although this note is
okay, it only CLEARLY explains one of the common ancestors and how that
connection is made (7th cousin 1 time removed). It is not clear to the
admins how they match with couples 1 and 3 in the above note.

Text for picture 5:

This is an example of a poorly written note. How will anyone in the future
figure out the match if it's on one of the other 10 lines we share? All
lines should be noted.

Remember, your DNA is a legacy that you are leaving to future genealogists.
