I was on Terceira for 5 months in 1984/85 and saw many of the reconstruction efforts still ongoing. My wife, who grew up in Angra and experienced that earthquake, said it was terrifying and devastating.
In the five years in was stationed on Terceira from 1987-92 we experienced a few tremors. A couple that reached about 5.0 (at most) sent all of our neighbors into the street; just in case it was another like 1980. Thankfully, none were. I was told at the time that most of the tremors we could feel were caused by underwater volcanic activity between Terceira and Sao Miguel (probably one/both of the yellow clusters on the map Rosemarie provided.
