Hi Debbie, The Jewish cemeteries in the Azores are relatively recent, dating to the 19th century when there existed a small community of Jewish families engaged in trade in the islands. Horta, on the island of Faial, was one of the main trade cities in the 19th century, and the Jewish cemetery there would belong to that period. There are some Azoreans today who descend from these families.
I believe that there are few or no records documenting specific individuals of Jewish origins in the early days of settlement of the Azores. Perhaps others on the forum can provide more info? I have family from Santa Cruz dos Flores and from Cedros, Flores-- happy to help with specific records, if I can. best, Linda On Tuesday, February 16, 2016 at 8:37:25 AM UTC-8, Debbie Gurtler wrote: > > I have a friend I am helping with her Portuguese ancestry and she is > asking about Jewish records for the municipality of Cedros, on the isle of > Flores.
