George, I've been doing some research and came across information on a Portuguese synagogue in the Bahamas I believe. Named after Luis de Torres. Luis was interpreter to Christopher Columbus in the USA. He was an integral part of the communication process between Columbus (Colombe) and the native Americans. Apparently he was a Sephardic Jew... His name was Yosef Ben Levi HaIvri but changed it to Luis de Torres in Portugal when he was forced to convert to Catholicism. I believe he was a moor and died in the late 1400's.
