I would caution you as to thinking that there were Portuguese contracted workers: contracting outside labor was illegal in the US by the time mass immigration from Portugal was happening, and if there was "behind the scenes" negotiations going on, they were *very* much behind the scenes and usually involved 1 individual at a textile mill letting somebody from his village know that there was work to be had. That message was then transmitted back home and folks would immigrate knowing that they could find work. There were NO formal contracts signed like there were in Hawaii.
