We need to all use the modern spellings of the names in our genealogy programs and make a note that it was recorded as "Joam" in the record. The only exception would be if someone legally spells their name that way today. We have a list member who spells his name "Manoel." My last name is spelled "Mello." My cousins spell their last name "Demelo." Right there, that's a problem. A D is not an M and computers can only follow what they are programmed to do. Luckily, it's only a few people currently. Imagine the headaches people will have in a few generations! They will probably change all of us!
