George, in my Genealogy program, Legacy, I write the modern spelling on the
main 'family' page. In my notes I then write the extraction of the document
'as written by the priest' or any other 'official' document. In this way,
you have the actual documentation but on the family page you have an easily
searchable given/surname. You will never be able to find someone in your
searching if you have the names spelled 5 or 6 different ways. I have a
grandmother, Cecilia that has her name spelled that many ways in various
documents. Unbelieveable!. I would never be able to find her with all of
those different spellings.
