Ribeira Quente is part of the concelho of Povoacao. It has always had a closer relationship with Ponta Garca due to its proximity. It is closer and easier to get to Ponta Garca from Ribeira Quente than any other large village. It always had a chapel, however, not until 1833 were marriages recorded in Ribeira Quente. Baptisms were performed from about 1792 on. The main industry was and remains fishing. Fisher folk would traverse over one hill to get to the eastern end of Ponta Garca where they would trade and sell their fish. They created a path between the two villages, now abandoned, called Tufo. Ribeira Quente is sort of surrounded by difficult mountain terrain which makes it difficult to get to Povoacao. In fact until about 1950, when they created a tunnel right through the mountain, it was a long way up and around to Povoacao. Besides Ponta Garca, you may see people from Povoacao, Furnas, and occasionally, from Vila Franca and other villages. This kind of relationship is true of Furnas, where up to certain time, all marriage records were kept Maia. Many other small villages in Sao Miguel had this kind of relationship with neighbouring larger villages until they became large enough to sustain their own churches.
