Adoptees, donor-conceived, affair-conceived, crime-conceived - they are all special cases. They are interested in our records to trace forward in time. We are interested in tracing back in time. We have some of these people on our list.
An Adoptee project exists on FTDNA as well as a Donor-Conceived project. Those people should be directed there for help (search for "adoptee" or "donor" in the search box at FTDNA. The range estimate doesn't mean squat for these people. They need a sibling, half-sibling or first cousin to make any progress (or a parent, if real lucky). They are really in it for a long haul. It's not like on the American TV program "Long Lost Family" where the host visits the person and goes off to do research. They show the host sitting down, going to Ancestry.com and finding stuff like it's easy-peasy. It's NOT. It takes these people years. And not everyone wishes contact. Let me ask you this: Can you name all your first cousins? ALL your second cousins? I can't. My mother has 35 first cousins. Their children are my 2nd cousins (we share the same great). How many kids did these 35 people have? I have no idea, probably in the neighborhood of 60 to 100. They live in another state 1500 miles away. Did someone have a baby out of wedlock and give it up for adoption? How would I know if my 2nd cousin, whom I can't even name had a child out of wedlock and gave it up for adoption? And if this match to your husband is talking about a 50 cM match, you are talking 6th cousins or something crazy. I have no idea how many 6th cousins I really have. A few hundred. Maybe a couple of thousand. So the best way to help him is to tell him that there's an adoptee project. He can also go to www.DNAadoption.com for more help. There's not a whole lot you can do unless your husband is the match's father, sibling, or a cousin he was very close to.
