I always use the modern spellings within reason. This makes it easier for your program to find a name when doing a search. Of course you can and should put the correct historical spelling in the notes section; that is where you place your transcription of the record. Some programs allow you to index names starting with first names, and that is method well suited for Portuguese names. I only realized this when Margaret V. brought it to my attention. One other thing to consider is accents. Yes it is nice to be accurate and use Portuguese accents. However, I have had nothing but problems when trying to create Gedcoms and reloading to a new or updated program. They often come out as coded gibberish- sometimes to the point where I can't recognize what the name actually was. I won't go through that again and risk corrupting my entire database. So I use plain alphanumerical lettering in all my records.
