Hi Paul G, They wouldn't mix up Anna with Joanna. It's 2 different names.
I'd make a sequential time line for these kids and note how the mother's name appears. If Anna died in childbirth or shortly after, Jose may have married her sister Joanna very shortly afterwards, as he needed help with those kids. I'd also check the marriages to be sure there's not 2 Jose Gomes Henriques in that village. There may be. I also may note the priest in this case too. He may have been hard of hearing and Joanna and Anna may sound the same to his tired old ears.
