Most likely the ship originated at another port or stopped at another port before going on to Hawaii and is listed under that port.

Let me clarify the circumstances further. He was not a passenger and did not live in Hawaii. According to relatives here and in Azores he was captain of the ship and was either going to or from Azores when he became ill and either died on board or after they docked in Hawaii and was then buried in Hawaii. Further complicating research is there is another person, a relative, with exactly the same name and also a ship's captain. Here are the details: Manuel Pereira Domingos, born 1 June 1843 in Ribeiro do Meio and lived in freguesia of Lajes on Pico. Assumption is that ship was a whaler but not confirmed. All agree he is known to have sailed in and out of Boston regularly. Have narrowed down his death to between 1903 and 1923. The other Manuel Pereira Domingos was born in Lajes on 3 Dec 1867 and immigrated to Massachusetts and also died there. If you can help that would be great but I understand if you can't. I'm not sure it's doable but thx again for offering. I'm still trying to find the consulate lists on family search. If a person died aboard ship, it was noted in the consulate logs. I am not sure if they note people who were ill. The LDS Family History Library has these in their collection. I think they are catalogued under something very vague like Index to the Portuguese. I think the Hawaii State Archives also has them. As Cheri said, death records prior to 1910 are hit and miss for Hawaii. If you find that they are listed as deceased on the consulate logs, it may be possible to ask around to see where those aboard ship were buried.
