I would say Maia. The document was probably misread.

Go to Tombo.pt (click on the British flag if you need to navigate in
English). Scroll down the left column to Azores/Açores, then Sao Miguel
island, then Ribeira Grande, then Maia. Go to 1868 and start looking for
your ancestor born to those parents. You may need to broaden your search to
a year or 2 before or a year or 2 after.

If you don't read Portuguese, there's a guide on the Azores Genweb to help
you bumble your way through. When I get back to my computer, I will provide
the link. Or maybe someone will beat me to it.
