Sam, If you marked the living private during your export, then they are private and you won't be able to see them when you upload. Redo the file, don't mark anyone private and upload it to FTDNA. Once FTDNA gets it, it will ask if you want the living private or not.
A quirk though is if you have your 3-great as born 1830 and no death date. Because there is no death, it is read as the person is still living and your matches will see that person marked as Private too.
