I think the more modern spelling is with an “s” instead of “z”. I’ve seen Joze, Thereza, Roza and even the parish church was Nossa Senhora do Rozario where as today it is Nossa Senhora do Rosario. Interestingly enough, the Spanish kept the “z”, Souza, Dominguez, etc.
