Thanks Cheri. I actually started to go record by record a while back. I started because I noticed that some of my ancestors were taking on their father's first name as their last (Nicolau do Rego's sons became Joao do Rego Nicolau, etc.). For now, what I am doing is going through the records and everyone that fits in my tree goes in my tree, it doesn't matter if they are the brother in law of the sister in law of the husband of my 2x GG (I have lots of time). On occasion, those people suddenly become blood related. As you may remember, I only started doing this in January, this way makes sense to me now but it may cause chaos later on, please let me know if you see any issues with doing this way. I have created a database for when I come upon a record that I know should fit in my tree but doesn't yet. Looking at the database, I have 1 João born to a Jacintho Bernardo and Jacintha Rosa in 1869 and 1 João born to Jacintho Bernardo and Jacintha Rosa in 1877. I am going to finish extracting birth records for 1897 and will start looking at marriage records to see what I can find to make sense of this.
You said "Kid #1 doesn't have maternal grandparents that match the other kids." I don't think any of the maternal grandparents match. I have not found a Maria #1 yet.
