I seem to remember someone asking about last names on FTM and some
instructions being given. I have, accidentally, found some other usual
information that I do not think was included at the time. If this is all
stuff that is already well know, I apologize.

It was mentioned before that you need to put backslashes around the last
name on names that have da, do, de so that it uses only the name after the
da, do, de as the last name Joao da Costa, I would enter Joao da /Costa/.
You can also put it at the end of the name to show that there isn't a last
name, for example; Maria de Jesus, I enter Maria de Jesus // this keeps the
whole thing as a first name. This saves me from going back and editing all
the "de something" names.
It does not matter where the name is, if you put the backslashes around it,
it automatically becomes a last name, this is useful if there is a known
"apelido". For example; Joao Soares Manteiga, I know that Manteiga was an
apelido but sometimes it is used as a last name by some of his relatives. I
enter it as Joao /Soares/ Manteiga. This will sort the name by Soares not
by Manteiga, but Manteiga will still show.
I have had a situation where I uploaded my FTM tree to Ancestry and all my
ancestors come up as "living" because there isn't a "deceased" option on
FTM. I now just enter "unknown" in the death field. This marks them all
deceased on Ancestry.
