Hi Gordon,

That sounds like an AncestyDNA thing. You need a Chromosome Browser and you
need to know the longest block (because of the Azorean endogamy problem).
AncestryDNA does not provide you with a Chromosome Browser. You and the
match both need to transfer to FTDNA and unlock the tools (Chr. Browser). I
see you are a transfer to FTDNA so I can use that as an example.

I'm looking at your FTDNA matches (AncestryDNA doesn't use Admins so I
can't help you there). I see you have a match of 85 cMs total (cMs -
centiMorgans, a genetic unit of measure).

A total of 85 cMs and the longest block is 19 cMs.

And you both share only 4 segments. So I'll compare you two in the
Chromosome Browser:

It's chromosomes 2, 3, 15, and 19. This adds up to 44 cMs total. The
remaining cMs are fragments, partially due to endogamy, partially due to
time. So the 44 cMs and the longest block of 16 cMs may be more like a 4C1R
or something more distant, such as a 5C, 6C, 7C, or 8C. You may find that
you are 5Cs two ways or something like that. That's why your total is
inflated.

So my question is, have you worked every single match above this particular
match? Going after a 44 cM (or 85 cM) to start isn't going to be
successful. Unless this NOT a Portuguese match that you are working (that's
for those in the reading audience who have other ethnicities - I've worked
a match that 55 cMs with the longest block of 19 cMs on my mom's Missouri
lines, but there's not an endogamy problem there so it's a different
strategy). On FTDNA you have these matches, all much stronger:

On Ancestry though, they would be listed differently. You need to work your
top matches and then work your way down the list (well, if one of your
upper matches tells you how they match someone further down the list, then
you'd be able to work that match).

If you are coming to Salt Lake in June, I have 4 DNA classes spread out
over 3 days. Also Kathleen Fernandes and I will be available in the
evenings to have DNA consultations with you: https://t2m.io/YfiGdr8C If
that is not feasible for you this year, many DNA conferences have
livestreams (for a fee). If you are interested in that, let me know and
I'll find out when the next ones are.

Hope this helps! Cheri
