Hi Margaret, No, I don't believe it was a miscommunication. On my last day there, a man was working behind the counter and he was bilingual. He told me (in English) that when I went home to America and find more inventories that I would like, it would still be possible to get copies. He said to email them and they would only copy pages that had to do with genealogy (because I really wouldn't want the rest) and email back (for a fee, which I did not discuss, as the inventories are all different amounts of pages). He gave me their contact card. So maybe it just depends on who you contact as to what story they will give you.
